St. Brendan the Navigator, an Irish monk from the 6th century had many sea adventures on his quest to find the 'Promised Land'. His feast day is celebrated on the 16th of May and he is the Patron Saint of seafarers and travellers.
This carving is made by a process known as Intarsia, which is the ancient art of making pictorial mosaics by laying precious and exotic woods onto a solid wood surface. Seven different woods are used to make these Celtic designs.
